Posthumous 70th Birthday: GMT Salutes Akeredolu's Lasting Legacy

The Grassroots Movement for Tinubu (GMT), Ondo State Chapter, has paid glowing tribute to the late former Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN, CON, on what would have been his 70th birthday, describing him as a courageous, principled and visionary leader whose legacy continues to inspire Nigerians.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by its Director of Media, Ojo Oyewamide, the group said Akeredolu distinguished himself through fearless leadership, unwavering commitment to justice and an unyielding dedication to the welfare and security of the people.

According to the statement, the late governor's greatest legacy remains his leading role in the establishment of the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun, which it described as a landmark initiative that transformed the security architecture of the South-West.

"At a time when kidnappings, banditry and violent crimes posed serious threats to the peace of the region, Arakunrin Akeredolu demonstrated uncommon courage by championing the creation of Amotekun despite political pressure, legal uncertainties and opposition from some quarters.

"His determination and leadership gave the South-West a home-grown security outfit that has become a model for community-based policing in Nigeria," the statement read.

GMT noted that history would remember Akeredolu as one of the principal architects of Amotekun and a leader who consistently placed the safety and well-being of his people above personal comfort and political expediency.

The group also described the late governor as a compassionate leader who believed in justice, fairness and the dignity of every citizen, adding that his honesty and candour earned him admiration across political divides.

"Though his frankness sometimes generated controversy, even his critics acknowledged his sincerity and authenticity. He never pretended to be what he was not, and he remained steadfast in defending what he believed was right," the statement added.

Congratulating the late governor on his posthumous 70th birthday, GMT said his life was a testament to honour, integrity and selfless service, stressing that his contributions to Ondo State and Nigeria would remain evergreen.

"Arakunrin Akeredolu lived with honour, led with courage and served with conviction. His footprints remain indelible, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations of leaders committed to service, justice and good governance.

"We pray that his gentle soul continues to rest in perfect peace," the statement concluded.
