The House of Representatives has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting policies and legislation that promote philanthropy, transparency and sustainable humanitarian interventions across the country.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, made the pledge in a goodwill message delivered on his behalf at the unveiling of the Knights of St. Mulumba Nigeria Endowment Fund and Charity Initiative in Abuja.
The Speaker was represented at the event by the member representing Ileoluji/Okeigbo/Odigbo Federal Constituency, Ondo State, Hon. Festus Ayodele Adefiranye.
Describing the initiative as a landmark step towards institutionalising charitable giving, Abbas said the Endowment Fund would preserve capital while deploying investment returns to finance humanitarian programmes on a sustainable basis.
He commended the Knights of St. Mulumba Nigeria for more than 70 years of service to the nation through faith-based humanitarian interventions, education, healthcare, youth development, prison apostolate and support for vulnerable members of society.
According to him, the establishment of the Endowment Fund reflects the Order's long-term commitment to expanding humanitarian outreach and ensuring that charitable interventions continue to impact lives for generations.
The Speaker also reaffirmed the commitment of the House to advancing legislation and strengthening oversight mechanisms that encourage philanthropy, promote transparency and accountability in charitable institutions, and foster collaboration among government, faith-based organisations, the private sector and civil society.
He stressed that nation-building requires the collective efforts of all stakeholders, noting that the Knights of St. Mulumba Nigeria have continued to exemplify the values of service, sacrifice and responsible stewardship through their various humanitarian activities.
The event attracted members of the KSM Supreme Council, Catholic faithful and other dignitaries, who gathered to inaugurate the Endowment Fund as a sustainable financing mechanism for humanitarian and charitable programmes nationwide.
Abbas congratulated the leadership and members of the Order on the successful launch of the initiative and expressed confidence that the Fund would continue to grow, broaden its impact and stand as a lasting legacy of Christian charity, peace, justice and national development.
