... Asks farmers to use decaying leaves to mulch the crops for nutrients instead burning
Warns road users against intake of hard substances
The Chairman House Committee on Security and Community Development in the Ondo State House of Assembly, Hon Ifabiyi Olatunji, (JP), has cautioned farmers and residents against bush burning to avoid preventable fire outbreaks.
Ifabiyi expressed concern over the previous year reports on fire incidents, caused by bush burning and electric spark where several farmers in agrarian communities across the country recorded farms destroyed and properties worth billions of naira gutted by inferno.
He assured that the state legislature was working closely with community leaders and officials of the local government councils to sensitise the people about the dangers of bush burning.
According to him, "bush burning can cause serious fire outbreaks and air pollution, including the destruction of properties and soil organisms that are beneficial to plants.
“Bush burning has been a common practice, being one of the steps of land preparation for the planting season in rural areas.
“Though the practice may have been inherited from our forebears or viewed as the simplest method of controlling weeds, it is not healthy for the environment and crops.”
The lawmaker warned farmers and hunters against the ill practice, adding that there were no justifiable reasons for the practice when compared to the consequences.
He advised farmers to rather adopt the culture of using the dry and decaying leaves to mulch the crops for nutrients.
“Allow the vegetation to get dry, pick up the sticks as firewood and use the dried vegetation to nurture the soil as manure,” he stressed.
The lawmaker urged community members to urgently contact the fire service offices or their agents in event of any case of fire outbreak in their communities for appropriate action to be taken, just as he also advocated for safety of all road users plying major highways in the country by avoiding hard substances while driving,as well speed less to prevent loss of life before, during and after yuletide seasons.
Ifabiyi, who doubles as house mouthpiece, gave the warning in a statement signed and made available by his press secretary in Akure on Monday, to congratulate people of Odigbo Constituency I for the month of December, the month which marks last calendar in the year 2025, sensitizes the public on the dangers of bush burning as harmattan season set in.
