Ondo Lawmaker Urges Nigerians to Defend Democracy, Honours June 12 Heroes

The member representing Odigbo Constituency I in the Ondo State House of Assembly, Hon. (Akoni) Ifabiyi Samuel Olatunji, has called on Nigerians, irrespective of political affiliation, to remain committed to the preservation and strengthening of democratic governance, describing democracy as the most viable system for promoting the collective interests of the people.

In a statement issued on Friday through his Press Secretary, Sam Ajide, to commemorate Nigeria’s Democracy Day, the lawmaker noted that the country’s democratic experience since 1999 has weathered numerous challenges, yet continues to endure through adherence to the principles of the rule of law and due process.

Hon. Ifabiyi observed that the challenges confronting Nigeria are not peculiar, noting that established democracies around the world have also faced periods of political and institutional tests.

He stressed the importance of respecting constitutional processes while strengthening democratic institutions and accommodating the nation’s cultural and ethnic diversity.

Reflecting on the significance of June 12, the lawmaker paid glowing tributes to the late Chief MKO Abiola and his wife, Kudirat Abiola, whose sacrifices, he said, remain central to Nigeria’s democratic history.

He also acknowledged the contributions of pro-democracy activists and other citizens who endured persecution and exile in the struggle to restore democratic rule.

According to him, the freedoms and democratic values Nigerians enjoy today were secured through immense sacrifice and should not be taken for granted.

“The democracy we celebrate today came at a huge cost. Chief MKO Abiola and his wife, Kudirat, paid the supreme price in the struggle for the enthronement of democracy, while many others made significant sacrifices for the nation’s return to civil rule,” he said.

Hon. Ifabiyi further urged citizens to promote national unity and support initiatives aimed at deepening democratic governance, insisting that democracy remains the best framework for ensuring justice, participation, and development.

He also called on Nigerians to complement government efforts in maintaining peace and security by remaining vigilant and promptly reporting suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
