Speaks on Government's Efforts in Curbing Water,other Disasters
The lawmaker representing Odigbo Constituency I in the Ondo State House of Assembly, Akoni Ifabiyi Olatunji, has appealed to residents to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse, particularly during the rainy season.
Ifabiyi, who also serves as the Chairman of the House Committee on Security and Community Development, made the appeal on Wednesday in his New Month message to constituents.
He expressed concern that despite the Ondo State Government's efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment across Odigbo Local Government Area, some residents continue to dump refuse indiscriminately on walkways, roadsides, and in drainage channels.
According to the lawmaker, the appeal became necessary in view of the health risks associated with improper waste disposal and the need to promote environmental sanitation.
"The state government is doing its best to keep the environment clean. It is also the responsibility of every resident to complement government's efforts by maintaining a clean environment.
"As the saying goes, a healthy nation is a wealthy nation. This is why government and relevant stakeholders continue to advise citizens on the importance of personal and environmental hygiene," he said.
Ifabiyi specifically urged residents of Ore, the commercial hub of the local government, to stop dumping refuse along Sabo Road and the Ore-Okitipupa/Irele Highway, warning that the practice poses serious health hazards to road users and nearby residents.
"The indiscriminate dumping of refuse is dangerous to public health. It exposes residents and commuters to environmental hazards and increases the risk of disease outbreaks," he added.
He further advised residents to dispose of their waste only at designated refuse collection points and encouraged households to purchase and properly use dustbins for waste management.
The lawmaker also warned that indiscriminate waste disposal creates breeding grounds for mosquitoes, contributes to flooding, and increases the spread of communicable diseases.
He reaffirmed his commitment to providing quality representation for the people of Odigbo Constituency I while encouraging residents to support efforts aimed at ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment.
